BODENs of Birmingham on Facebook

Origin of Surname:

1.    Bodin, Boydin - New name from France post 1066, diminutive form for Baldwin (OFr Bodin, OG Baudin).

2.    C16th French emigrant Bowdoin.

3.    Bowden - home of a family name; C13th Leicestershire.

4.    Bowdon - ME bove 'above' ton 'village' (as BOWTON & BUFTON) or ME dane 'valley'.

5.    Perhaps linked to the Salopian family name of RODEN as BODEN is a common name in that county and appears to be the roots of this family who moved to the industrialising West Midlands.

Distribution of the family name in 1881 (above),
which predominates in the NW Midlands area. This is still reflected in 2000-2005 data (below).

Discussion

The exact detail of William BODEN & Mary DUDLEY is circumstantial. On face value, using Birmingham records, William (1816) could be the only child of William & Mary, since there are no other baptisms. It is also not clear from burial records that William & Mary remained in Birmingham. However, a potential matching family can be found in Rounds Green, Oldbury (just west of Birmingham), with several descendant families in the Rounds Green area. Census information confirms William to be of Birmingham, and Mary of Oldbury (then part of Shropshire until 1844). Other children of a William & Mary (based on census & Oldbury baptisms) are:

       Thomas BODEN (1815-1838);

       Henry BODEN (1817-bef 1837);

       Samuel BODEN (1820-1846) = Sarah WINDMILL (2 sons)  killed in the Rounds Green pit disaster of 17 Nov 1846 along with his younger brother, Jacob, and his wife's father;

       Benjamin BODEN (1822-1903) = Betsy WESTON (5 children);

       Charlotte BODEN (1824-1827);

       Mary Ann BODEN (1826) = Samuel FRANKS;

       Jane BODEN (1828-after 1851);

       Joseph BODEN (1829-1860?);

       Sarah BODEN (1831-1893) = William BIRD;

       Jacob BODEN (1834-1846)  killed in the Rounds Green pit disaster of 17 Nov 1846;

The 1851 Oldbury census is interesting in providing William BODEN with a much older son prior to his marriage to Mary DUDLEY. This could only be accounted for by William BODEN = Ann Westwood BANNISTER marriage in 1804 in nearby West Bromwich, when William was a minor (or that the census record is incorrect). Baptism confirm 3 children to this marriage prior to William's possible remarriage:

       Thomas BODEN (1805);

       John BODEN (1808-1866) = Alice BRADFORD in 1834 Tipton. Children (based on baptisms and 1841/1851 census records):

  Thomas BODEN (1836-1898) = Mary Ann GARRETT (7 children in Oldbury);

  William BODEN (1837-1837):

  Selina BODEN (1840-1917) = Thomas GREEN in 1861 then William BOWEN in 1884;

  Samuel BODEN (1844-?) = Hannah GRIFFITHS (10 children in Oldbury);

       James BODEN (1809);

I would be pleased to hear from any of the Oldbury families to potentially clarify relationships.
