The WILSON Family of C18th Brinsley & Greasley villages, Nottinghamshire


Name distribution in 1881: A patronym for William's or Will's son, common in the northern English & Scottish Lowlands.


The current researched head of the tree is Abel WILSON (<1675-1725) who married Ann HIDES in 1697 Greasley (& then Isobel DODSON in 1711). Abel is my 8xGGF. The WILSON family name may have originated from the north of England (see map). Greasley became a populous parish by the early C19th with the development of the coalmining industry. Most males were involved in mining in the Yorks-Notts-Derby coalfield. There is also the village of Wilson in nearby Leicestershire (parish of Breedon on the Hill) which may explain the name locally.

�      John WILSON (1702) � no history;

�      William WILSON (c1710-1752) - Mentioned in Abel's Will of 1725 (granted in 1729);

There are no records for any children to Abel & Isobel. It is possible my 7xGGF, William is the last child of Ann or the first child of Isobel.

William WILSON probably married Ann HALLAM at Sibthorpe in 1728 (William was given of Sibthorpe & Ann of Aslockton) and re my 7xGGPs. Children of William & Ann:
