Distribution of the family
name in 1881. The name of NW Welsh origins (Welsh patronym
for son of "Robert") is quite common in the West
Midlands, most likely due to economic migrants during the
C18th Industrial revolution. West Bromwich RD has a
significant number of ROBERTS in the GRO period from 1837-1850
inclusive (142 Births; 84 Marriages; 74 Deaths). In 1841,
West Bromwich had 22 Lock- & Keysmiths.

The
head of my tree is Isaac
ROBERTS,
Locksmith, (my 4xGGF) who lived in the central Birmingham area
(initially within the churches of St. Martin (St M) & St.
Philip (St P - Birmingham Cathedral) in the period up to 1825,
then afterwards in Handsworth, part of Staffordshire but now a
part of Birmingham). Records suggest the following family, where
most of the males and their male descendants were in the
hairdressing trade. I would be interested to hear from anyone who
may be aware of, or has inherited, a traditional ROBERTS
hairdressing trade in the Portsmouth area of Hampshire in modern
times, or have family stories to supplement or correct this
pedigree. Isaac is possibly the s/o Joseph
& Mary ROBERTS baptised
in 1781 in nearby Halesowen (then part of Shropshire).
