Name variations: HOLBROCH, HOLBROOKE
The name originates from OE 'hol' meaning hollow and
'broc' meaning brook. It was not an uncommon place name in local use, and can
be found in historical text and maps in many English counties. Particularly
for this family, Holbrook was a hamlet in the Chipping Sodbury district of
Gloucestershire, and therefore many of that name can be found in nearby Iron
Acton and Thornbury near Bristol. Based on the infrequency of similar common names
in the earliest C16th registers, it is thought that they had not been in the
area for very long in a historical sense. The origins before that time are
unknown.
Seeking ancestry
of William HOLBROOKE
& Hannah of Iron Acton (my 6xGGPs). Are they originally
from Iron Acton or another area nearby? Baptism of William or his marriage
pre-1750 not found there. Their known children include: Arthur
HOLBROOKE
c. 13.5.1750 Daughter Hester HOLBROOKE (my
5xGGM) had a daughter Harriet
HOLBROOK (n. c1783 from MI; c. 23.5.1790 at Iron Acton, St
James the Less; father unknown). Harriet HOLBROOKE = John MONKS,
Mason/Stonecutter on 8.3.1807 at St James Bristol (my 4xGGPs). Other
possible connections: 1825 Will
of Daniel HOLBROOK of Iron Acton, Glos., who names Harriet & Maria HOLBROOK as d/o James HOLBROOK, late deceased of Iron
Acton, and his wife Tamar. The outline above is indicative only and not
necessarily fully correct or complete. |
