Current head is Thomas HARRISON (c1803), a Collier of Green Hill Lane*, and his wife Elizabeth KNIGHTON of Somercotes m. 24.12.1823 at Alfreton [my 4xGGPs]. Thomas may be s/o Thomas c. 20.2.1803 at Alfreton. Descendants were part of the many coalmining families working many parts of the Yorkshire/Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire coalfield. The Greenhill Lane Hamlet was on the road between Leabrooks & Riddings (map below). Their daughter Ann HARRISON (n. c1828) = Thomas VARLEY, a Coalminer of Green Hill Lane, Alfreton on 23.8.1846 at Alfreton Parish Church (both were given as minors). [My 3xGGPs]. Witnesses were John KNIGHTON & Elizabeth WILLIAMSON. Their children were:
After Thomas's death (c1843?) the widow Elizabeth HARRISON = widower Joseph ELLIS between 1848 & 1851 [Joseph ELLIS probably first married Esther ASHLEY in 1825 at Tibshelf, who was buried 18.5.1848 at Tupton.] Their combined families were living at Railway Ferry, Staveley, Derbys., in 1851 [ELLIS sons Samson (17), Joseph (14), James (12) & Edward (10), all coalminers, and 3 HARRISON children; Joseph HARRISON (17), coalminer, Elizabeth HARRISON (13) both above in 1841 & new son James HARRISON (8), all of Greenhill Lane.] In 1881 Elizabeth ELLIS was living with her sister Mary JOHNSON nee KNIGHTON in Hasland, near Chesterfield. Elizabeth's stepson Joseph ELLIS was also living in Hasland. The families of Samson & James ELLIS, and Joseph & James HARRISON, both coalminers, were in 1881 New Cross, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts. *Note: Greenhill Lane (GHL) is not a street in Alfreton, but one apparently running between the villages of Swanwick (some GHL refs in 1841) and Riddings. The majority of references suggest that GHL is a district hamlet and is treated as a village in the 1851 census. The
outline above is indicative only and not necessarily fully correct
or complete. |
