Introduction

Note: This synopsis includes some general information on the family name but is specific to the researchers own BIDMEAD family lines out of Gloucestershire and Coventry in Warwickshire. Questions and analysis related to the one-name study for BIDMEAD & BITMEAD surnames worldwide, as well as the researchers own family, are handled on the Facebook research blog. Otherwise, please use the contact form.

The family name appears derived from "by the meadow", i.e. mead being an old England name for meadow. While the BIDMEAD surname has clear Gloucestershire origins, based on records, the origin of the BITMEAD surname is less clear. BITMEAD is predominately found in the Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Hertfordshire & Buckinghamshire area, and may be an independently-derived surname (having the same derivation, but from a different locale) or may indicate a regional dialect or spelling of an early BIDMEAD migration out of Gloucestershire. Some analysis based on date of available records is provided on the Facebook research blog.

The BIDMEAD family is believed, by several modern branches, to be related to Captain Sir Henry MORGAN, C17th privateer and Governor of Jamaica. These family lines divided in the mid C19th. The story has been independently forwarded down several BIDMEAD lines into the C21st, which is quite remarkable, suggesting some original incident behind the family legend. If true, then MORGANs own history suggests that this would have occurred in the early 1650s. That the tales of Captain MORGAN should survive more than 360 years along various family lines is quite remarkable. If any BIDMEAD line has stories relating to Henry MORGAN, then that is a valuable clue to their likely connection to the common tree, even if this is yet to be proved by a paper trail. Please refer to the MORGAN webpage for more information.

The Coventry family is now spread worldwide including New Zealand (pioneer settlers from 1842), Australia, Nova Scotia, Canada and the USA (from the 1860's). US descendants now living in New Jersey, Massachusetts, Montana, Florida, California and Connecticut. Family still in Coventry, Birmingham or the Nuneaton areas of Warwickshire. While having spread further afield in the UK, the main concentration remains Gloucestershire & the Coventry area.

Note: Spelling variants can include - BIDMADE, BIDMAID, BIDMEADE, BIDMEAT, BIDMED, BIDMEDE, BIDMEED, BIDMID, BIDMOT, BITMEAD, BYDMEAD, etc., so research can require the use of wildcard searches when checking for online records.

Synopsis

The Coventry branch of this family has been traced back to the Rodborough & Bisley area of Gloucestershire (the dark blue area in the SW Midlands of England shown on the map above). There are other Gloucestershire families that may be related but unproven (a good example being those families clustered around Newent). These are not covered here but are fully documented in an online Ancestry.com tree. However, it should be noted that the origin of the family name (its simplicity) could lead to many independent families who just happened to be "abiding by their local meads".

Research suggests the following lineage:

Richard BIDMEAD (c1688-1734) = Rebecca SAUNDERS (c1696-1748) in 1714 at Sapperton. My possible 8xGGPs. Their children may have included:

       William BIDMEAD (1717 Minchinhampton) m. 1739 Bisley = Grace JENNINGS. My 7xGGPs. By 1770 this family had moved to Coventry. Grace had died in 1760 in Minchinhampton. William was buried in 1 784 in Coventry. They were weavers and the town was famous for its silk weaving and other cloth manufacturing at the time. The industry started in the town in 1627 but was enhanced by jacquard weaving Huguenot families fleeing persecution in Europe. [The first sophisticated mechanism for complex patterns was developed by Joseph Marie JACQUARD (1752-1834)]. Children:

o   Hannah BIDMEAD (1740 Minchinhampton), possibly = Thomas ADAMS in Rodborough in 1767;

o   Esther/Hester BIDMEAD (1746 Rodborough);

o   Susannah BIDMEAD (1749 Rodborough  1822 Coventry) m. 1770 Coventry = Thomas REED;

o   Elizabeth BIDMEAD (1751 Rodborough) = John SHAW - see family below (my 6xGGPs);

o   Sarah BIDMEAD (died 1756);

o   Richard BIDMEAD (1754 Rodborough);

o   Joseph BIDMEAD (1756 Rodborough);

o   William BIDMEAD (1758 Rodborough) m. 1778 Coventry = Lydia WRIGHT. In 1779 William became a Freeman to the Clothworkers Guild, Coventry, and evidence suggests his children were involved in a family business (possibly founded by William) for the warehousing of silk cloth both in Coventry & London. Children:

  Benjamin BIDMEAD (1779-1860) - apprenticed to father (Ribbon Weaver) in 1791. m. 1806 = Mary LIGHTBOURNE. Benjamin was a silk warehouseman based in Coventry, presumably the home town base of the family business. Children born in Coventry include:

  Martha BIDMEAD (1808-15);

  Lydia BIDMEAD (1811-43);

  Mary BIDMEAD (1812-13);

  Jane BIDMEAD (1811-15);

  David BIDMEAD (1822-30);

  Mary Elliss BIDMEAD (1825-1866) m. 1856 = William BAKER (1825-59), then William JARRAMS (1824-1909) in 1863. Mary had an illegitimate child:

  Mary Ann BIDMEAD (1847-63) illegitimate;

  William BIDMEAD (1782-1828) - apprenticed to father in 1796. He was weaver in Chauntry Place, Coventry. There is no evidence he married;

  Sarah BIDMEAD (1785)  no history;

  Thomas BIDMEAD (1787) is possibly the man who married Mary KINGSTON in London in 1808. In the Napoleonic War, he appears to have found himself in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1809 for the birth of his son (possibly only child) Stephen BIDMEAD, who appears on UK census as a British Subject born in Denmark;

  Ebenezer BIDMEAD (bef 1790 Coventry-after 1822 London) was a London Warehouseman. He married Elizabeth Butter GRANT in London in 1809. Before his wife died in 1820, they had two children - Ebenezer BIDMEAD (1811-65; married Susanna BAUGH and had 3 sons & 2 daughters) & Lydia BIDMEAD (1813, who appears to have been sent back to Coventry, where she was married  her uncle Benjamin witnessing). Ebenezer was one of two witnesses to his sister Lydias marriage;

  Joseph BIDMEAD (c1790 Coventry-bef 1841) was a London Warehouseman & Agent. He married Martha Elve TOLLEY in London in 1815 (2 sons & 4 daughters). Joseph was one of two witnesses to his sister Lydias marriage;

  Lydia BIDMEAD (c1794 Coventry-1873) = James CLUTTERBUCK in 1818 London. The couple settled in Hornsey, Middlesex;

  David BIDMEAD (c1798 Coventry-1854 London) was a London Warehouseman & Merchant Clerk. He became insolvent in 1842, having his business in Bread Street. In 1820 London, he married Elizabeth Morgan MACHIN (1796-1865). The couple had 3 sons and 5 daughters;

o   Isaac BIDMEAD (1759-1826) was a tailor in Stroud, GLS. In 1783 = Mary ARUNDEL. Rodborough children:

  Mary BIDMEAD (1783);

  William BIDMEAD (1785), a plasterer of Cheltenham, GLS = Elizabeth JONES in 1812 Painswick. 1 son and 1 daughter known;

  Charlotte BIDMEAD (1788-1854) = Robert BARNETT;

  Joseph BIDMEAD (1790-1851), a plumber of Cheltenham = Caroline TIBBETTS in Gloucester in 1820;

  Anna Maria BIDMEAD (1792);

  Elizabeth or Eliza BIDMEAD (1795);

o   Rebecca BIDMEAD (1759-60);

The Coventry Family

Historical Note: The church of St John the Baptist in Coventry, where many BIDMEADs were baptised and married, was used during the 1642 English Civil War to hold prisoners, often brought in from outside the city walls. Coventry was held by the Parliamentarians throughout the war. The English expression of being sent to Coventry (excluded from polite society) first appeared in 1647 describing those events.

This researchers main Coventry branch is descended from the illegitimate son of Elizabeth BIDMEAD (1751-1814) & John SHAW (1750-1814), a Pewterman and later Freeman of Coventry. Their son Benjamin BIDMEAD (1770) kept his mother's name, even though it appears he was also baptised John SHAW in 1770. Elizabeth & John married in 1772 and had Mary SHAW (1773) & Thomas SHAW (1774). Therefore, the Y-DNA genetics of the male line should match SHAW rather than BIDMEAD, assuming John SHAW is Benjamin's father.

Benjamin BIDMEAD (1770-1816), Cordwainer, married Rachel DUFFKIN (1769-1831) in 1793 (incorrectly mistranscribed as DURKIN on some records). My 5xGGPs. Their children were:

       Benjamin BIDMEAD (1800-56) = Charlotte EDBROOKE (1818) of Cornwall in Plymouth, Devon in 1843. Their relationship started prior to Benjamin serving with the Royal Marines in China. Only child:

o   William George BIDMEAD (1838, Devonport - 1893) = Eliza STANLEY in 1857 Coventry. Children:

  Charlotte Eliza BIDMEAD (1867-1943) = 1898 Coventry to Henry WATSON (1870-1911);

A BIDMEAD Silver Fusse Pocket Watch. Casing is hallmarked Sterling Silver, London with year stamp "U" for 1875. The year 1875 is also stamped along with watch number 50214. Movement is stamped and engraved "Bidmead Coventry 50214". Makers mark is "I.H" which records suggest is silversmith John Harris (verified by the Goldsmiths in London), a watchcase maker of Coventry who first registered his mark at the London Assay Office on 11 Apr 1866 and continued his business through into the 1880's, and therefore a contemporary of the BIDMEAD watchmaker. It is likely the watchmaker is Joseph BIDMEAD (1838-1923), my 3xGreat Granduncle (s/o 4xGGF William, also a Coventry watchmaker).
