CreativeGraces.net -
This synopsis was reviewed and updated in July 2019 by The Geneal Geologist - Origin
of family name probably comes from a place derived from "ash"
(tree) + "ford" (shallow river crossing), assumed to be of local
origin near a river passing through the area
The
head of the tree appears to be Thomas ASHFORD (c1770-1836, although
age at death suggesting a YOB of 1779 may not necessarily be correct), gun lock filer, & Elizabeth WALKER (c1775-1833) who
married 16 Jul 1793 at Aston Juxta Birmingham. Thomas may be one of the
following: ·
s/o
James & Ann* c. 23 Mar 1770, Aston Juxta Birmingham; ·
s/o
Joseph & Hannah c. 17 May 1773, Birmingham St Philip; ·
s/o
Edward & unknown c. 1770, Aston Juxta Birmingham; ·
s/o
William & Lydia HORTON, c. 7 Dec 1765 Handsworth St Mary; * atDNA – A DNA tester reports a match to a descendant of
Phoebe d/o James & Ann, who also matches two children of Thomas &
Elizabeth, thereby implying the most likely parents of Thomas are James &
Ann. If one family, Joseph, Edward & William could be Thomas’ brothers,
so may share common (single family) ancestry and other options remains open
while the sample size remains small. Thomas
& Elizabeth
appear to have had 19 known children (at Birmingham St Philip (St P) & St
Martin (St M)). Any of the boys appear to have extensive families in the
Aston & Birmingham areas based on top down analysis of census data,
however others lack data and are assumed to have died young or possibly
emigrated. The family were part of the Birmingham gun trade. As
several ASHFORD families were present in the area with similar names, caution
about any assumptions is advised as other researchers may interpret the data
differently, however church records that include “of Thomas & Elizabeth”
and “father Thomas ASHFORD” for children of the correct age are the basis of
any assumptions in this pedigree. atDNA may eventually resolve the
phylogenetic tree for the family. In
general, the Birmingham area is serviced by multiple registration districts
as it is situated at the junction of 3 major counties (Birmingham & Aston
in Warwickshire and Kings Norton (part of Worcestershire and including
outlying villages of Harborne & Edgbaston, etc.) and Handsworth (part of
Staffordshire and included in the West Bromwich RD). Several marriages took
place in these neighbouring areas which are all now part of Greater
Birmingham. Based on baptismal information, the family were in
Henrietta Street in 1816, then Hospital Street in the period 1817-1822; the
part of Aston immediately NNW of central Birmingham. Early C19th marriages
were probably mostly within the area's gun trade. Due to many references,
some facts cannot be truly verified. I am open to alternative data and
research that can prove otherwise. The children of Thomas & Elizabeth
shown in purple, below, are indicated as being atDNA matches, implying they
are siblings. Match detail has not been verified. Children known not to have
survived childhood are in italics. · 1. William ASHFORD (1793 St P). Family detail not known
after the 1841 census (trade not readable). His first wife has not been

In 1851 census his wife is given as “Caro” which has caused some confusion.
After exhaustive research, it is assumed to be “Cath” or “Cate” or similar,
since there is no record of a second marriage to a Caroline. The family may
have emigrated after 1851 due to lack of records for all except for one son.
Providing a second name for Thomas is an indicator that an earlier child with
that name died young. Recorded children: o
Betsy ASHFORD (1838-38); o
Sarah ASHFORD (1838) possibly = in 1858 Birmingham to William
GRIFFITHS but no father mentioned in index. Nothing conclusive after 1851
