The
SKEELS Family of
C17th/C18th East Riding, Yorkshire
Nothing much is
known about the family in East Riding (lack of LDS data).
Elizabeth SKEELS
married Joseph
COPELAND (c1720)
on 23.2.1744 at Brandesburton, who are my 6xGGPs. Elizabeth's
mother is Mary, who died a widow in Brandesburton in 1795.
The surname of
SKEELS is reported to be a baptismal name for 'the son of
Schayl', with a concentration of the name in Yorkshire where it
was first recorded in the C17th. Other potential spellings of the
name include SKELL, SKELLS, SKULL, SKOLL and SKOLLS. Even earlier
records have the name - a Dionise SCHAYL recorded in Yorkshire in
1273 and Walter SCHAYL of Yorkshire listed in the Yorkshire Poll
Tax in 1379. There is a Danish family of the same name, and it is
assumed the name came to England through the period of the Dane
Law.
