[Charles Baden is
further commemorated in Koondoola, north of Perth, Western
Australia. War veterans names have been used for streets. There
is a Shelvock Reserve Park & Shelvock Crescent.]
Having passed his
medical on 17th June 1940, he enlisted at Claremont, Perth on
23rd July 1940 under General Reinforcements. He stated that his
birthplace was Shrewsbury in 1906. His occupation was a mechanic,
and his married status given as single, although research shows
that he abandoned his wife and children in England. His father
was given as Charles SHELVOCK of unknown address. CB's address
was 241 Beaufort Street, Perth. He signed as Chas B Shelvock. At
some stage his record was amended to read married and wife as
Marjorie SHELVOCK of 22 Oxford St, Leederville, Perth. He was
identified as having brown hair, hazel eyes, and as having scar
on thumb. He was enlisted as WX5018 into the 2/4 Machine Gun (MG)
Battalion.
After basic
training he was transferred to the 2/4 MG Battalion in December
1940 and underwent further training in assorted schools and trade
groups. He embarked for the war in July 1941 from Freemantle, and
most likely married before this date. While on the voyage he was
assigned as the cook for trade grouping II. In August 1941 he
disembarked at Darwin for further training.
In December 1941
he was assigned to AIF Malaya and disembarked from Darwin,
arriving Singapore via Batavia on 26th January 1942. Singapore
surrendered on 15th February 1942 and CB was registered as a
battle casualty / missing in Malaya effective 16th February. So
it appears he was part of the reinforcements that tried to defend
Singapore without success. In effect CB's war was over after
three weeks of battle.
He was reported
as a POW in September 1943, 19 months after he was reported
missing. 14 months later (November 1944) he was reported as a POW
in a Borneo camp. The records suggest he may have been in the
notorious Changi Prison until sometime in March 1943.
Unfortunately he was reported as having died in
captivity on the 1st November 1945 at Sandakan. No cause of death
was given. Although the war ended in September 1945, many Pacific
outposts of the Japanese may not have known the war was over or
that rescue had not yet reached this area. In addition, many POWs
held by the Japanese were in very poor condition and any disease
or illness could have caused his death.
He
was awarded the 1939/45 Star, the Pacific Star, the Defence
Medal, War Medal and ASM (presumably the Australian Service
Medal). These were mailed to his wife in Perth on 25th March
1953.
