NOTED PEOPLE & OCCURRENCES OF THE NAMES

An offbeat section containing some references and trivia from various fields. Categories include:

ART, BUILDINGS, BUSINESS, DIVINITY, GEOGRAPHY, HISTORY, LITERATURE, LOCAL HEROES, MUSIC, PIRACY, POETRY, POLITICS, PRIZE WINNERS, SPORT, THE SCIENCES & TV.

When I first started this page there were few references on the Internet. Today, there are many SHILVOCKs noted for their sporting and academic achievements, school and personal websites, as well as professions far beyond the comprehension of their nail-making forefathers. SHELVOCK references are predominantly historical and relevant to the place. Accordingly, it is impossible to document them all and so only unusual notes will be included. If you have suggestions for inclusion , please let me know.

TV

Historical items with the SHELVOKE brand name: includes the SHELVOKE dustcart used in one of the episodes of "Dad's Army", and the SPV tender used in the TV series "London's Burning". A BBC programme also saw the restoration of an S&D dustcart.

LOCAL HEROES

Two Post Office workers in Lye (near Stourbridge) Tracy AUTIE & Susan SHILVOCK (aged 40 of Wassell Road, Wollescote) saved the life of a female customer who collapsed, by using CPR. They received honours from the Royal Human Society (founded in 1774) which honours life-savers and those involved in heroic rescues. (Express & Star Newspaper on 12th December 2000)

MODERN MUSIC

1997: Birmingham managed band "Mugwump" included Dane SHILVOCK on drums and Mark SHILVOCK playing bass & vocals.

"Ashen Mortality" (Forsaken Records) a Neil SHILVOCK played drums in 1996-97. Ashen Mortality played many gigs around England. After a mini tour in 1997 to support the release of Sleepless Remorse, Neil left the band.

"Magical Steel" - singer Brandon SHELVOCK.

"Shilvock Cycle" for Organ was performed (in parts) at an Organ recital concert in Wolverley Parish Church (2000) by Timothy Mark Henry (U of Bristol, Dept. of Music). Piece was commissioned by friend Matthew SHILVOCK (s/o Rev. Geoffrey SHILVOCK at Wolverley).

This web author's own concept album "Shelvock".

PRIZE WINNERS

A C SHILVOCK of Stourbridge won 6th Prize in the 90th Reader's Digest Draw. Yes, there are really people out there who seem to win this annual UK event!

ART

The one known watercolour painting by a W. H. SHILVOCK owned by Kathy SWEENEY in the US. This probably dates from the middle of the C20th.

BUSINESS & TRADE ORGANISATIONS

The SHELVOKE name can be found in several engineering firms such as Accles & Shelvoke, Shelvoke & Drewry (famous for specialised vehicles such as those used in the fire service), Shelvoke Dempster (refuse carts), and Dennis Shelvoke. The name is also incorporated into a firm of Accountants in Cannock, Staffordshire.

Vancouver, Canada: an Association of Printing House Craftsmen called at the office of Shilvock-Parkes Ltd., Pender Street West, on February 13th, 1929, for purposes of preliminary organization. At this foundational meeting the following were present; L.C. Parkes, Roy SHILVOCK......

In 1920, a group of men in Chicago felt the need for an organization where they could meet and discuss common problems relating to paint and varnish products. A meeting was held on December 17, 1920, at the Hamilton Club in Chicago, which saw the founding of the Paint and Varnish Superintendents' Club of Chicago. This new club subsequently became known as the Chicago Society for Paint Technology. The Society continued to flourish and in 1973, in keeping with the modern role of the industry, the name was again changed to the Chicago Society for Coatings Technology. Today, the Chicago Society is among the two largest of the 26 societies that are affiliated with the Federation throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and the United Kingdom. Among those present at the founding were ................Jack SHILVOCK"

MODERN POETRY

Jill SHILVOCK of Stourbridge continues to write many poems.

GEOGRAPHY

Canada - Shilvock Road, Kimbourne, Ontario

BUILDINGS

Grimpo Congregational Chapel (Grimpo is the village 3km north of Shelvock).

Open air services were begun in Grimpo in 1830, and a chapel erected, which opened on Easter Monday 1832. Due to structural decay this chapel was replaced by a new chapel, which opened on 11 May 1885. This is the chapel in the photograph. The chapel is built of red brick and Shelvock freestone, and has a small tower and spire. It cost £560.

[Shelvock freestone would either be a sandstone or a limestone that is so fine-grained that it can be shaped without splitting. Research has revealed an old quarry opposite the gate to Shelvock.]

More recently, TGK Homes launched a new development situated close to the River Perry on River View in the village of Ruyton XI Towns. The Shelvock design is described as a beautiful detached four-bedroomed home for £355,000

DIVINITY

Occasional references in newspapers allow members of the Clan to be quoted on issues of the day. According to the London Sunday Times of 26th January 1997 a survey of 200 members of the Anglican clergy found that some could only remember two of the ten commandments passed down from God to Moses. Only 34% could give all ten commandments. The London Sunday Times survey also showed two vicars did not believe in heaven, and more than half believed there is life on other planets. Geoffrey SHILVOCK, from Wolverley, Worcestershire, who could not remember all of the commandments, questioned their prohibitive nature, saying, "The trouble is that they are very negative ... most people prefer a more positive approach."

Rev Gregory SHILVOCK represents the rural area and Wolverley & Cooksley for the Diocese of Kidderminster.

LITERATURE & CLASSICAL POETRY

History does not rebound with the heroic deeds of many SHILVOCKs & SHELVOCKs. The most noteworthy figure to date is Captain George SHELVOCKE who wrote the 1726 book entitled "Voyage Around the World By Way of the Great South Seas performed in 1719-22", based on his exploits, partly as a privateer 1690-1728 (2nd edition 1757; reprinted 1951). In the book it alleged that HATLEY, a sailor on this expedition, was the Ancient Mariner who shot the Albatross in Coleridge's famous poem. His son George SHELVOCKE, who travelled with him, later became Secretary to the General Post Office in London from 1742 to his death in 1760. An alternative history of that voyage was published by another crew member.

Speedwell Voyage; The, Kenneth Poolman, 216 pp, 6 drawings, 7 maps, notes, glossary, index, Hardback, 6X9, List Price $26.95. The story is based on the real-life adventures of George SHELVOCK, commander of the 22-gun privateer Speedwell that set sail in 1718 to steal treasure from Spanish ships in the South Seas. Filled with pirates, mutinies, sea battles, violent storms, and shipwrecks on exotic islands, the fast-moving narrative offers authentic details of the period and honest characterizations of real individuals. Not since Shelvocke's own book was published in 1726 has the full story been told, although Samuel Coleridge based his Rime of the Ancient Mariner on events reported by the Speedwell captain. This is the only modern attempt to recount the epic voyage.

There are several reminiscences by the poet William WORDSWORTH concerning the above:

"Written at Alfoxden in the spring of 1798, under circumstances somewhat remarkable. The little girl who is the heroine I met within the area of Goodrich Castle in the year 1793. Having left the Isle of Wight and crossed Salisbury Plain, as mentioned in the preface to "Guilt and Sorrow," I proceeded by Bristol up the Wye, and so on to North Wales, to the Vale of Clwydd, where I spent my summer under the roof of the father of my friend, Robert JONES. In reference to this Poem I will here mention one of the most remarkable facts in my own poetic history and that of Mr. COLERIDGE. In the spring of the year 1798, he, my Sister, and myself, started from Alfoxden, pretty late in the afternoon, with a view to visit Lenton and the valley of Stones near it; and as our united funds were very small, we agreed to defray the expense of the tour by writing a poem, to be sent to the New Monthly Magazine set up by Phillips the bookseller, and edited by Dr. AIKIN. Accordingly we set off and proceeded along the Quantock Hills towards Watchet, and in the course of this walk was planned the poem of the "Ancient Mariner," founded on a dream, as Mr. COLERIDGE said, of his friend, Mr. CRUIKSHANK. Much the greatest part of the story was Mr. COLERIDGE'S invention; but certain parts I myself suggested:--for example, some crime was to be committed which should bring upon the old Navigator, as COLERIDGE afterwards delighted to call him, the spectral persecution, as a consequence of that crime, and his own wanderings. I had been reading in SHELVOCK'S Voyages a day or two before that while doubling Cape Horn they frequently saw Albatrosses in that latitude, the largest sort of sea-fowl, some extending their wings twelve or fifteen feet. "Suppose," said I, "you represent him as having killed one of these birds on entering the South Sea, and that the tutelary Spirits of those regions take upon them to avenge the crime." The incident was thought fit for the purpose and adopted accordingly. I also suggested the navigation of the ship by the dead men, but do not recollect that I had anything more to do with the scheme of the poem. The Gloss with which it was subsequently accompanied was not thought of by either of us at the time; at least, not a hint of it was given to me, and I have no doubt it was a gratuitous afterthought. We began the composition together on that, to me, memorable evening."

"The Ancient Mariner was founded on a strange dream, which a friend of COLERIDGE had, who fancied he saw a skeleton ship, with figures in it. We had both determined to write some poetry for a monthly magazine, the profits of which were to defer the expenses of a little excursion we were to make together. The "Ancient Mariner" was intended for this periodical, but was too long. I had very little share in the composition of it, for I soon found the style of COLERIDGE and myself would not assimilate. Beside the lines (in the fourth part)--"And thou art long, and lank, and brown,/As in the ribbed sea-sand--" I wrote the stanza (in the first part) "He holds him with his glittering eye--/ The Wedding-Guest stood still,/And listens like a three-years child:/The Mariner hath his will.--" and four or five lines more in different parts of the poem, which I could not now point out. The idea of shooting an albatross was mine; for I had been reading SHELVOCK'S Voyages, which probably COLERIDGE never saw. I also suggested the reanimation of the dead bodies, to work the ship."

Christopher Smart's "Jubilate Agno" (1722-71) contains the following lines in Opening of Fragment B, (which was not published until 1939!) referring to the Postmaster General:

"Let Achsah rejoice with the Pigeon who is an antidote to malignity and will carry a letter...
For I bless God for the Postmaster general and all conveyancers of letters under his care especially Allen and Shelvock..."

Football: Various SHILVOCKs have represented their local team Halesowen F. C., and were part of the best "Yeltz" team ever. The great team of the 1980's prominently featured Robert SHILVOCK in midfield. Robert played in at least one of the Wembley FA Vase triumphs. His brother Steve also played in the same era. Robert went onto play for Bromsgrove Rovers and then Kidderminster Harriers. Steve managed Halesowen's reserve team and then went onto manage the reserve team at Bromsgrove Rovers.

PIRACY

Capt. SHELVOCKE was a buccaneer and is recorded in "Chile: A Brief Naval History", Chapter I -"Pre-History, Conquest and Colony", sub-section "Pirates" - In 1720 the English SHELVOCK attempted to attack Concepcíon but without success, eventually losing his ship at Juan Fernández. Finally, local authorities fortified all the main ports: Ancud, Valdivia, Concepcíon, Valparaíso and La Serena. The inhabitants of smaller towns where no royal (Spanish) troops were quartered, were organized into militia units. These two measures eventually put an end to piratical raids.

WRITTEN HISTORY

Winston A. SHILVOCK - in the library of University of British Columbia, Canada there are 12-14 Copies of Submitted Reminiscences including Shilvock, Winston A. - "History of the Student Publicity Campaign, 1932"; also an article "Spanish Invasion - Fragmentary evidence of Spanish 'invasion'" by Winston Shilvock (about 800 years after the Chinese were reputed to have been in the Okanagan Valley another myth popped up suggesting that Spaniards could also have been there).

George SCHELVOCK, ou Shelvoke, comme l’écrit Rumpf, auteur anglais, Artillerie de Simienowicz, in-fol., Londres, 1729.

The Public Records Office contains many correspondence to and from George SHELVOCK, the Younger in his capacity of Postmaster General. George appeared in two cases at the Old Bailey regarding theft from his buildings.

Both the Lords of Shelvock and the THORNES had significant impact on their local history of the time due to their senior positions within their county. Read more
