Seeking ancestry of John SHAW, Pewtermaker and later Freeman of the City of Coventry, who married Elizabeth BIDMEAD on 2.11.1772 at St Michaels, Coventry.Their first child, Benjamin BIDMEAD, was illegitimate but baptised also as John SHAW on 21.12.1770 at St. Phillips, Birmingham. This may indicate John senior had Birmingham origins. It appears that Benjamin being born out of wedlock continued to use his given name rather than his baptised name of John SHAW. The BIDMEAD family name from this point onwards should really have been SHAW. Benjamin married Rachel DURKIN (actually DUFFKIN) in 1793 at St. Michael's Coventry. Other known children born within the marriage of John & Elizabeth and baptised in Coventry in the 1770's include Mary SHAW (c. 31.5.1773) & Thomas SHAW (c. 20.9.1774) at St. Michael's, Coventry. If you are connected in any way with this SHAW family you may have heard family tales of a connection to Sir Henry MORGAN. This would have come from the BIDMEAD family. |
