Seeking ancestry of Anna Maria REMINGTON who married Samuel DUFKIN of Chilvers Coton (S Nuneaton), Warks on 10.11.1762 at Holy Trinity, Coventry.Name could be viewed as REMINGTON, REMMINGTON or RIMINGTON. [Note: Warwick RO gives surname as BENNINGTON,
but original entry is REMINGTON. REMINGTON is in the 1544 survey of Nuneaton. They are also in the Hearth Tax and one Edmund REMINGTON (mis-spelt RENINGTON and KEMMINGTON) was recorded as having 5 hearths between 1663 and 1666 when the property was empty, plus arrears for 1 hearth in 1664. A Thomas REMINGTON had 1 hearth and then built another two in 1670 (then mis-spelt RIMINGTON). It looks like he had a son Edward REMINGTON. In 1676 Edward REMINGTON was living in Wash Lane on the very border of Chilvers Coton and Nuneaton parish. (Chilvers Coton is a rare parish which almost enters the centre of town of its adjoining parish). Edward REMINGTON seems to have done pretty well from these records as he took over a property of the local lord of the manor: Edward STRATFORD who had 5 hearths and built two more. So he had 7 hearths in 1674. The Hearth Tax appears not to be collected after 1676. The impression is that the REMINGTONs were wealthy people as they had some of the largest houses recorded at this time. They might have been substantial farm houses. Thanks to Peter LEE of the Nuneaton & North Warks FHS for the above info. |
