The MAYNARD Family of C16th North Stoke, Gloucs.


 

Distribution of the family name in 1881.

Joan MAYNARD/MAINARD/MAYNERD, of North Stoke (C16th widow, possibly nee ?SMYTHE married William BATMAN, Husbandman of North Stoke.
His Will dated 25.3.1586. She died 1594/97, her Will filed at PCC 1594.

Corston is parish adjoining North Stoke; many refs in PR down to mid C18th, all descended from Edward of Corston & Joan SMYTHE. Newton St Loe is also adjoining; PR contains numerous MAYNARDS from 1539 onwards. (in SoG)

Will of Edward MAYNARD, yeoman of Corston 1652 proved PCC;
Iif this is the original Edward, then Joan SMYTHE is not the widow who married William BATMAN. Possible s/o of Edward (death date to be confirmed). Edward and Joan SMYTHE had children at Corston 1573-83 & d. 1617.

The Maynard exchequer deponent in 1588 was William.
Somerset Subsidy Rolls; 1597-98 Wm MAYNERD at North Stoke.
Gloucs. Will of Richard GUNNING of Cold Ashton, Bitton etc., d. 1559 of Bitton mentioned Wm MAYNERD of North Stoke as one of his debtors.

William MAYNARD who bought the copyhold of Stanton Prior Manor from Prior of Bath in 1533 reportedly gave his age as 100 years in 1582, perhaps his father?
Probably also the man who witnessed will of John HOLBYN of North Stoke 1548.
