The family name is explained as being related to Arbuckle in Lanarkshire, Scotland. The modern distribution of the name, even based on 2000-2005 data (map below), shows a clear East Midlands origin which does not really support this explanation. It could easily have a trade derivation from horn buckle making for clothes, unless a Scottish exiled family very well established by Elizabethan times. The HORNBUCKLEs appear to have owned Radford Hall at one time, according to records. The HORNBUCKLE name is still connected with the East Midlands, with many American families either descended from the Nottinghamshire settlers in Virginia or the slaves that worked on their lands and took their name. States include South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Oregon, California, Arizona, Oklahoma, Missouri & Kentucky. A number of present day HORNBUCKLEs are also descended from settlers in C19th Victoria, Australia.
The original family is based in and around West Bridgford, SE of the city of Nottingham, then villages to the SE:
