The family name is derived from the English patronymic meaning "son of the brave" or "hardy one", which in turn is derived from the first name Heard, from the Old English 'heard' meaning "brave, hardy."

The family is based in and around West Bridgford, SE of the city of Nottingham:

Head of the family is Walter HARDING & Elizabeth TROWELL (1535). Walter was buried on 1.1.1606 in West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire, and is my 11xGGF. Their children were:

  • Robert HARDING (1572);

  • Walter HARDING (1574) & Elizabeth WHEATLEY (abt 1582) of West Bridgford married 13.4.1602 (my 10xGGPs):

    • Margaret HARDING (1602-1676) m. George BOWSKILL (1606-58) on 17.6.1620 in West Bridgford (my 9xGGPs);

    • Ann HARDING (1607);

  • Ann HARDING (1576);

  • Elizabeth HARDING (1580);
