OverviewFamily name is derived from one or several local place names in West Riding, Yorkshire. Another has been found at Euxton, near Chorley in Lancs., suggesting a number of places, and possible multiple geographical origins for families of this name. At least three 'hills' still survive with variants on the name (see maps below), but based on early name distributions one of the West Riding locations is the prime candidate for the family origins. For more detail on the origins of the name click here. The name has been long established since as early at 1275 and one origin is suggested from OE glede for kite (the bird). Other derivations of the name, possibly with Norse origins are being investigated by others. My particular branch of the family is believed to be one of several that moved to the Hartshead area sometime by 1545 from the Stainland area, where they had been recorded since the C13th & C14th.
