The GLEADHILL / GLEADLE / GLEDHILL Family of C17th Hartshead, WRY

Overview

Family name is derived from one or several local place names in West Riding, Yorkshire. Another has been found at Euxton, near Chorley in Lancs., suggesting a number of places, and possible multiple geographical origins for families of this name. At least three 'hills' still survive with variants on the name (see maps below), but based on early name distributions one of the West Riding locations is the prime candidate for the family origins.

For more detail on the origins of the name click here. The name has been long established since as early at 1275 and one origin is suggested from OE glede for kite (the bird). Other derivations of the name, possibly with Norse origins are being investigated by others. My particular branch of the family is believed to be one of several that moved to the Hartshead area sometime by 1545 from the Stainland area, where they had been recorded since the C13th & C14th.

Distribution of the family name in 1881.
with the Mid & West Yorkshire origins clear.

Outline

Currently seeking the ancestry of William GLEADHILL, who married Jennitt (of unknown family) in the early C17th. Both are buried at Hartshead, WRY; he ?30.11.1655 and she 23.2.1657.

William's wife may be Jenet WILBYE who first married William CROFT in 12.1590
and was widowed quite soon afterwards.  There is also a Jennet, daughter of
Willme WILBYE (c. 26.12.1611) in Dewsbury. I am interested in other women of this name in this time period who may be candidates, or the discovery of the marriage of William GLEADHILL (or name variant).

The many possible spelling variations for this family name are discussed here.
