The
GIFFORD Family of C19th Ashford, Kent and possibly then London
My interest is to see whether any information may be held within the family concerning my GRACE family.
Harriet Anne GRACE, the eldest daughter of my 3xGGF Jeremiah GRACE & Mary Ann née BOWLES, was christened on the 4th March 1838 at St George's, Ramsgate, Kent. On the 4th October 1857 at St Mary's, Ashford, Kent (witnessed by Jeremiah & Mary Ann GRACE), then aged 19, she married Francis Charles GIFFORD (aged 20), Labourer, son of George GIFFORD, Labourer.
Only one child is so far known, Francis Rosina GIFFORD, born c1858 in Ashford, and christened the 22nd August 1858 at St Mary's, Ashford. She had no occupation on the 1881 census and was perhaps married ?1881-91. She was resident with the GRACE family.
There was an illegitimate child, Rosina Mabel GIFFORD, born to Francis ca. June 1880 (from 1881 census). Her christening has not been found to 1892 (father unknown); St Catherine's Index 2Q 1880 W. Ashford 2a 764.
What is interesting about Francis Rosina GIFFORD (aka Francis Rose GIFFORD) is that she was always resident with her grandparents, the GRACEs, in Ashford. The whereabouts of her parents are unknown. Perhaps they emigrated? I'd also like to solve this mystery.
