The Birmingham Gun Quarter:

The Birmingham Gun Quarter was centred in the part of the city lying between the foot of Steelhouse Lane and Aston. There were a mixture of factories of moderate & small size as well as "shoppings", the name given to workshops which were let out to individual out-workers. It was close, cramped, higgledy-piggledy, with early Victorian tenement buildings pushing in between buildings of an earlier time and function.

The largest factory was that of Webley and Scott in Slaney St., but smaller firms such as Bonehills and Benjamin West in Price St., and numerous others in Price Street. Mingled with these factories were workshops. A gunsmith who wished to set up business of his own would rent a space in one of these from either the Council or the company of other gunsmiths who might be doing quite different work.

DUGARDs listed as Gunmakers at Whittall St 1849-1871.
Robert DUGARD (n. 1784): Gun & Pistol Maker 1822-39, before being bought out by William TRANTER, at 13 Moland Street 1822, 11 King Street 1822-26, 29 Whittall Street 1827-39. In 1841 an advertisement read "William TRANTER (successor to R. DUGARD), Gun and Pistol maker, for home and exportation, No. 29.5 Whittall Street, Birmingham. Percussion caps, waddings, implements, barrels, locks, and furniture of every description."
Isaac & Martha DUGARD in 1851 were employing two hands and Emma PEARCE (15) House Servant

Some Worcestershire Settlement Records:

  • 14.5.1829  Removal order. Charles DUGARD, wife Margaret & daughter Elizabeth 5 weeks old from Birmingham to St Andrews, Droitwich

  • 21.1.1813  Removal order. Elizabeth DUGARD, wife of William DUGARD, a private in the Royal Marines, now in actual service, & William her child about 2 years old from Lower Mitton, Worcs. to the township of Stourbridge

  • 29.1.1770  Settlement examination taken at Chaddesley Corbett. Joseph DUGARD, basketmaker. He was born in the parish of Rock in the county of Worcester, where his father then lived and was legally settled. He saith that about 20 years ago, he this Examinant took & rented an estate in Chaddesley Corbett of Sir Robert THROCKMORTON at the yearly rent of £49. He saith he lived and occupied the same about 5 years.... About 21 years ago, he intermarried with Mary his present wife, by whom he hath three children now living, vizt. Benjamin about 20 years old, Nancy about 16 & Mary about 13, and further saith not... (signed)

  • 1763  Thomas DUGARD certificated by the parish of Salwarpe to Elmley Lovett

There are passing references to the name DUGARD in other settlement examinations. These give little information that cannot be obtained from parish registers, apart from occupations, e.g.:

  • Soley Wells, examined 2.1.1752 in Chaddesley Corbett, said he had worked (about 1726-32) as a journeyman servant at the fulling trade by the week for a Mr. DUGARD of Bromsgrove, for 6 years or thereabouts

  • Humphrey MASKALLl, examined 19.5.1773 at Bromsgrove, said he had been hired c1748 to William DUGARD, yeoman of Grafton Manor (near Bromsgrove) for a year at wages of £5.5.0

  • William PEPLOE, examined 13.1.1772 at St Andrews, Droitwich said that when he was 13, he was hired by Thomas DUGARD of Salwarpe & served him for two years.

The name DOGOOD may be a variant of DUGARD. There was a family called DOGOOD in Lye, (maybe Leigh) in Worcestershire.
