INDEX |
Family name derived from the Old English personal name Dodda or Dudda and 'leah' meaning a woodland clearing owned, or lived in, by Dudda. In the Middle Ages, the Sutton family inherited the title of Lord Dudley, and many branches dropped the Sutton name, using Dudley as their surname, making the name well established by the Tudor period. It is unlikely my family is a descended from the Sutton family or its branches, but adopted directly from the name of the town. In many cases this would have been an identifier of an individual based on his place of origin as de Dudley. The earliest recorded uses of the name in this form are in nearby parts of Staffordshire and Worcestershire rather than the town itself, suggesting that all the ancestors of this line lived in the local area prior to the C18th.
