The COPELAND (COUPLAND / COOPLAND) Family
of C17th/C20th East Riding, Yorkshire

This family has historical roots in Brandesburton, an East Riding village that is connected with both Skirlaugh (Poor Law Union) & Beverley (County Court District) for BMD records, as well as nearby Driffield & Hull/Sculcoates RDs. Even where family members have temporarily moved away, it seems they are inevitably drawn back to the area, as the family summary below shows. There are about 250 connected COPELANDs in my full Ancestry.com family tree, so email me for a free invite to view the detail.

The head of family may be Joseph COPELAND (c1695) who married Elizabeth ELLIS on 9.8.1716 at Saxton in Elmet, Yorkshire, however it not proven. They would be my 7xGGPs. It is presumed they had a son Joseph COPELAND (c1720) who married Elizabeth SKEELS (of unknown history) on 23.2.1744 at Brandesburton, who are my 6xGGPs.

Joseph & Elizabeth's children at Brandesburton, East Riding, include:

  • William COPELAND (c. 15.1.1745), my 5xGGF m. Elizabeth FAIRBANKS in Sproatley on 4.7.1768. Their known children include:

    • Esther COPELAND (d/o William only) c. 22.7.1771 at Preston, who m. Edward CAMPLIN (botp) at Sculcoates on 6.3.1806. [Note: Preston, Sproatley & Long Riston are neighbouring villages.]

    • Thirza, Theresa or Teresa COPELAND (c. at Preston by Hedon on 29.11.1773, who married Daniel BRICKNALL (aka BICKNALL) in Sculcoates (botp), Yorkshire on 15.7.1806, who are my 4xGGPs. Witnesses were Margaret KING & John ROBINSON. She and her husband were in Sunderland in 1807 and later in Foston-on-the-Wolds (at least in period 1810-16). A widow in 1841 at Hatton Green, Warwickshire, after the family moved back to Daniel's roots by 1819, she died in Hatton in 1856;

    • Isaac COPELAND c. 20.1.1776 at Long Riston (s/o William & Elizabeth);

  • Robert COPELAND (c. 21.8.1748), m. Elizabeth CLARKSON in 1770 Brandesburton. Children:
