The family name is explained as being of Anglo-Saxon and Old Norse origin, a locational surname deriving from Bowscale near Mungrisdale in Cumberland. It is derived from the Old English "boga", bow, a short form of the name of the local bow-shaped hill, (i.e. Bow Fell), with the Old Norse "skali", for a hut, shed, or temporary building", which in Middle English developed into the word "scale". While this derivation may account for the local concentration in Cumbria (see map below), it does not really account for the concentration of the name very much focused on Nottinghamshire and the West Riding of Yorkshire. It is possible Norse influence resulted in a similar sounding name to the Cumbrian reference, however it is also possible it was an honorific to a very skilled bowman or archer.
The family is based in and around West Bridgford, SE of the city of Nottingham:
