The BODEN Family of Birmingham
Local ONS (Early C18th - C20th)

Origin of Surname:

1. Bodin, Boydin - New name from France post 1066, diminutive form for Baldwin (OFr Bodin, OG Baudin).

2. C16th French emigrant Bowdoin.

3. Bowden - home of a family name; C13th Leicestershire.

4. Bowdon - ME bove 'above' ton 'village' (as BOWTON & BUFTON) or ME dane 'valley'.

5. Perhaps linked to the Salopian family name of RODEN as BODEN is a common name in that county and may be the roots of this family who moved to the industrialising West Midlands.

The current heads of my tree are my 5xGGPs Edward BODEN (born sometime in the 1740's: a number of BODEN researchers believe he is s/o Edward BODEN & Hannah c. 19.1.1744, Madeley in Shropshire) & Mary HAWTHORN who married at St Martin's, Birmingham in August 1774. Edward was buried as BODIN in 1799 and Mary in 1808 at St Mary's. Edward BODEN was a Toy Maker of Whittall Street, Birmingham. The couples known children and descendants now follow. Over 140 connected BODENs can be viewed on my Ancestry.com tree.

The following children were baptised at St Martin's, Birmingham:

• William BODEN (1775; assumed to have died in infancy);

• Benjamin BODEN (1777) a jeweller, who married Mary TYLER or TAYLOR in 1800 St. Martin, Birmingham and had at least three children baptised at St Philips:

  • Benjamin BODEN (1810, born 1808). He may have married Catherina HARRISON in 1832 Edgbaston;

  • Sarah BODEN (1811);

  • Jane BODEN (1812);

• Mary BODEN (1779);

• Edward BODEN (1781; see story below);

• Ann BODEN (1783);

• Esther BODEN (1785);

• Catherine BODEN (1788; who possibly m. Thomas ALLEN in 1825 at St Martin's);

• William BODEN (1789; see story below);

• Charlotte BODEN (1791), who witnessed the marriage of brother William & Mary DUDLEY , below;

• Samuel BODEN (1793);

Brothers Edward BODEN (1781) & William BODEN (1789) are both my 4xGGFs as William & Mary's son William BODEN (c1815), a Brassfounder of Lancaster Street and Publican/Retail Brewer, and Edward & Mary's daughter Elizabeth BODEN (1818) were married at St Phillip's in 1837 to become my 3xGGPs:

• Edward BODEN, a Gilt Toy Maker & Pearl Ornament Maker, married Mary FRANCIS at St Philip's, Birmingham in 1804. Children:

  • John Francis BODEN (1805), at Gilt Toy Maker, m. Mary Ann BUSHELL in 1823. Children:

    • Edward Francis BODEN (1826). Edward has several marriages:

      • Wife #1 - m. 1848 to Sarah WALTERS who died 1852). Child:

        • Clara Walters BODEN (1849), who appears to be have been brought up by her aunt, m. 1873 = BELTON or LOACH;

      • Wife #2 - Matilda HARRIS but died by 1877 (not found). Children:

        • Frederick Francis BODEN (1855) = Lucy Amelia EVANS in 1878. Lucy died in 1888. Known children in Gloucester:

          • Lily BODEN (1880);

          • Frederick BODEN (1881);

          • Francis BODEN (1882);

          • Nellie BODEN (1884);

        • After Lucy’s death = Emily Ann Boden JONES in 1890. Gloucester children:

          • Florence Elizabeth BODEN (1911) = BULLOCK;

          • Ellen BODEN;

          • Gladys BODEN;

          • Lillian BODEN;

          • Violet BODEN;

    • William John BODEN (c1858-1900) = Sarah Elizabeth DAVIES in 1881. Children:

      • Lavinia BODEN (c1883) = MORRIS;

      • Gertrude BODEN (c1890) = WRIGHT;

    • Sarah Ellen BODEN (c1863) m. 1890 = CLEAVER or PICKERING;

    • Alfred BODEN (c1866), m. 1896 = Gertrude BOND. No issue by 1901;

    • Samuel BODEN (1887), who may have emigrated to Australia;

    • May Elsie BODEN (1888);

    • Florence Emma BODEN (1890), who had a daughter Vera BODEN (1904);

    • Albert BODEN (1891)

    • William Frank BODEN (1893);

    • Horace Charles BODEN (1895-1922) who lived in Newbrighton, Liverpool;

• Rosena or Rose BODEN (1871), m. James NELSON in 1894;

• George Robert BODEN (c1876), m. 1900 Aston = Eliza BLOOMER. Children in Kings Norton include:

In 1891, William & Louisa BODEN's family (William BODEN (16) Gun Maker, George R BODEN (14) Brass Cock Filer, Polly BODEN (12) & Frances BODEN (6)) were living with retired widowed William BODEN senior at 262 Newtown Row, Birmingham. Rosena & Elizabeth were at the house of older sister Louisa LATHAM.
