- A Local One Name Study - The family name comes from the village of Blatherwycke situated 5 miles NE of Corby, Northamptonshire, half way towards Stamford, Lincolnshire, England. "wic" is Old English for farm. Blather has a variety of possible origins - suggestions include from a persons name (e.g. Balther's Farm), to some distinguishing feature such as bladder-like plants (from Old English "blaedre"). The latter would be likely if a particularly low lying, marshy area.
I have three family branches of a complicated
(and yet unresolved) series of families in Nottinghamshire. Records start from 1748. The families of John BLATHERWICK & Mary ASPBURY (my 6xGGPs) and their daughter Mary BLATHERWICK (c1756) who married William STEPHENSON / STEVENSON (my 5xGGPs). FAMILY #2: Head of tree is William BLATHERWICK, a carpenter of Bulcote & Sarah HOPKINS of Lenton, Lincs., who married in Lenton in 1771. Children at Burton Joyce, Notts:
In the 1851 census for Notts., BLATHERWICK families are concentrated in a few villages: Gunthorpe, Bulcote, Lowdham & Hoveringham. The first name William appears to be particularly popular. In the 1844 Trade Directory of Nottinghamshire there are 3 BLATHERWICKs in Burton Joyce: John BLATHERWICK (a framework knitter), Joseph BLATHERWICK & William BLATHERWICK (both joiners). Family groupings are derived from microfiche 1.2.1748-8.9.1823 (Burton Joyce baptisms) & 1851 census returns for Burton & Bulcote. It should be noted that the Burton Joyce Local History Society have reportedly been unable to resolve all family relationships due to too many similar names and family events around the same time. The file below contains some detailed research and other contacts/researchers. This file is supplied with the understanding that any errors, additions or new family links will be forwarded to keep this resource as up to date as possible for future researchers. Thanks.
